The 34th America’s Cup Protocol was issued on the 13th of September 2010. After many meetings, internal discussions and analysis, Sir Keith Mills concluded that the new America's Cup format would be neither commercially viable, nor an attractive sporting contest for TEAMORIGIN. Therefore he reluctantly decided that the team would not, this time, submit a challenge.

During 2007-2010, TEAMORIGIN delivered many achievements of which the team and all who supported it should be very proud. We set out to build and showcase a great team – and we achieved that and more.

  • We brought together an outstanding group of people - both on and off the water - who were a credit to the sport.
  • We created a brand in TEAMORIGIN that built a reputation for being world class, professional, dynamic and competitive.
  • We notched up race wins against some of the world's most competitive sailing teams.
  • We launched Race for Change in partnership with the Carbon Trust to demonstrate how a sports team can make a positive impact towards climate change.
  • We continue to be the Main Partner of the RYA's OnBoard programme, introducing over 500,000 young people to sailing over a 10 year period.
  • We attracted and retained partners including Jaguar, Garrard, McKinsey, Linklaters and Henri Lloyd, to name but a few.
  • We worked with the Royal Thames Yacht Club to devise and run the hugely successful 1851 Cup regatta during Cowes Week 2010.
  • We laid the foundations for Great Britain to, one day, win the America's Cup and bring it back home to where it all began.

VICTORY AT ARGO GOLD CUP IN BERMUDA

Our match racing team led by Ben Ainslie with Iain Percy, James Stagg and Christian Kamp took victory at the thrilling Argo Gold Cup event in Bermuda, defeating Jesper Radich and his team from Denmark in the Finals.

Reflecting on his triumph, Ainslie said: “We made it hard for ourselves and had a battle all the way through but maybe what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger. We had fantastic racing against Jesper – it was classic stuff, as good as match racing ever gets.”

Next up for the TEAMORIGIN match racing team is the grand finale event of the 2010 World Match Race Tour – the Monsoon Cup in Malaysia, the winner of which will be crowned the 2010 World Champion. The TEAMORIGIN team will be Ben Ainslie, Iain Percy, Mike Mottl and Matt Cornwell. The event promises some epic racing as there is a lot at stake. The winning team take home the event prizemoney of US$475,000 and a share of the tour prize pool of US$250,000. With the event offering 1.5 points more than a standard WMRT event, the racing will be intense and our eyes will be on Ben Ainslie and the TEAMORIGIN team.

In line with the decision not to challenge for the 34th America’s Cup, TEAMORIGIN has decided not to compete in the forthcoming Louis Vuitton Dubai Regatta. We wish every success to this event and all the competing teams as it promises to be a spectacular regatta. Many thanks to Louis Vuitton as a sponsor for putting together such a great series of regattas over the last two years.

Despite the decision not to enter the AC34 event, Sir Keith Mills has agreed to continue the backing and support of TEAMORIGIN as the Main Partner to the RYA’s OnBoard programme. This impressive programme, which TEAMORIGIN have supported since 2007, is introducing 500,000 young people to sailing over a 10 year period. Since April 2005 there have been 266,168 young people sailing sessions, 13408 regularly sailing young people, 30 OnBoard areas established, 29 OnBoard Officers, 210 clubs and centres signed up and working with 1,439 schools, 1,646 teachers and 2,744 volunteers. During 2010 there were 35 OnBoard  festivals with 1,900 children taking part - all impressive achievements to say the least!

Sir Keith Mills is attending the annual OnBoard conference in November to meet and catch-up with the team.

TEAMORIGIN looks forward to another exciting year during 2011 of OnBoard festivals and inspiring the sailing champions of tomorrow!

TEAMORIGIN formed the ‘Race for Change’ partnership with the Carbon Trust back in 2009 and we worked closely together to understand how sports teams can make a positive contribution towards climate change. We learnt a number of valuable lessons from this strategy:

  • how to monitor, manage and reduce environmental impact – we developed an innovative framework for monitoring and analysis
  • how to focus carbon management to maximize carbon reduction, what actions make the best savings
  • how to engage with our partners and suppliers
  • how to communicate the message and lessons to our supporters
  • how to get the internal team onboard and understanding how we all have a role to play

We are currently in discussion with the Carbon Trust as to how we can evolve ‘Race for Change’ so that it lives on and can help to enable other sports teams to benefit from these learnings

Sir Keith Mills and all the TEAMORIGIN team would like to thank all of their Partners, Suppliers, Supporters and fans of the team that showed their support and help over the last 4 years. Together we should all be very proud of our achievements during the journey we have travelled together.
