Pirates of the Caribbean – Volvo Ocean Race – Pescanova Grumetes Day, Portsmouth

Mainsail was delighted to have been asked to be part of the world famous Volvo Ocean Race Campaign by providing invaluable event management for ‘The Black Pearl’ – the Disney ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ entry to the race.

At many of the worldwide stopovers, one of the Black Pearl’s sponsors, Pescanova, hosted a ‘Grumetes Day’ for up to 1000 local school children in that area and provided them with a day to remember.

Mainsail were responsible for the ‘Grumetes Day’ at the Portsmouth stopover and organised an unforgettable day for the children at Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth. The waterfront area was to be transformed into ‘Pirates City’; a treasure island with cannons, palm trees, sand, treasure chests and skulls scattered around the area.

Within ‘Pirate City’, an impressive grandstand was designed to seat all of the children, their teachers, the VIPs and press guests. In front of the seating area, which overlooked the waterfront, a giant jumbotron screen and stage were erected, ready for the Pirate crew to entertain and educate the crowd.

The children would eagerly await the arrival of the Black Pearl and her swash buckling crew as they sailed into the harbour! Paul Cayard, the Black Pearl skipper, was then to give a dramatic presentation about the race and life on the open waves. This was followed by an energetic and unique performance from the Sheppey Pirates theatre company.
